Did they just air the rudder or was it a gear failure?

how they sort out everything without external aid? how is possible to go back in the navigation position with no help?

The support boat pulled them back upright. It was towing them forward, which provided lift from the foils in the water to right it.

Another video shows they'd been bouncing in and out of displacement mode for a while, and had an unusually large amount of heel on while trying to initiate foiling after another big splashdown before the capsize started. Maybe the heel is why the rudder cavitated. It's a long way to the centerline from the foil so not much angle translates to a lot of depth loss. itput.info/zone/video/gK2ggoJwrqiqinI

They broke the boat. They won't be able to defend the Cup now. You heard it here first.
Gottenhimfella
6 giorni fa
Down here on Planet Earth, they were out sailing the next day. And unlike in Bermuda (where they DID break the boat - or at least the wing - big time, but were STILL out racing the next day) this time they did not break stuff. These boats are easy to capsize compared to the cats, but they survive it a whole lot better. Which means some of the learnings will trickle down to real vessels used in the absence of chase boats and rescue divers. Or land.

From other footage I've seen there was a chopper in the airspace a bit too close for comfort so it appeared. Maybe that downdraft affected the rudder getting cavitation and losing its grip.
Captain Smed

@Rex Ellacott hilarious

This is going to happen to all crews or similar throughout the regatta. When you are pushing these yachts at this speed mishap will happen. Better now than later. Team NZ looked to have a good lead.

@Gottenhimfella The excessive heal when they started flying probably didnt help. It seems like they didnt expect it to pick up speed so early and caught them off guard.

When you have practised more and worked out how to go all the way, that manoeuvre will be a winner in the underwater legs of the Cup. None of other teams will be able to do it. 😉

@rusty DUFFY maybe because they are taking risks and pushing things?nothing bad about trying different tactics, some pay off some don’t 🤷🏻♀️but I guess that’s why they do it ay

They just put it in the full down position for righting. Then they tow the boat forward and the foil does all the work to right the boat.

Iv just seen another post & a helicopter was above the yacht & looks like the down drought was the culprit
Ryan
7 giorni fa
The stb foil would of been fully down which is a preset position to get as much moment on the port side for righting the boat when this happens, when both foils are fully down there is very little room between the inboard tips of the port and stb foil, they are almost touching, you never see them in that position whilst sailing. It will be there.
